KaJ069: Dynamic

Here is the final knitajourney episode, and Permaculture Principle Twelve: Creatively Use and Respond to Change.

The thanks this week are for you. It's about you, listeners. It always has been.

Forever and always, thank you.
Journey on.

Listen to Episode 69

KaJ068: Edges and Margins

The penultimate knitajourney episode, featuring Permaculture Principle Eleven: Use Edges and Value the Marginal.

The thanks this week are to all of the people who design and deliver all of the pieces that support the podcast.

And always, thanks to Edward Martin.

Listen to Episode 68

KaJ067: Diverse Matters

Here in episode 67, it's Permaculture Principle Ten: Use and Value Diversity.

If you would like to see a photo tour of this past year's Holiday Decorating Contest, click on A Bit of Blogging, in the left sidebar.

As I wrap up knitajourney, this week I am specifically thanking the podcasters.
And I send big thanks out to Edward Martin, for the Rondeau.

Listen to Episode 67

KaJ066: On the Small and the Slow

This week I'm talking about Permaculture Principle Nine: Use Small and Slow Solutions.

I talk a bit about what I'm knitting, and a bit about how I came by the lovely wheel in the photo above.
In the Bit of Chatter I mention Mr. David Kortier, harpmaker. My thanks to him for bringing me and this Earl Oman wheel together.

And then, in a Bit of a Forecast, I'm excited about the Knitajourney Midwinter Retreat, making plans for the Knitting Pipeline retreat, and thinking about the potential trips to the Northwest, Virginia, and maybe Miami.
But then, I also have to share some thoughts about finishing this podcast journey.

Slow music this week by Edward Martin.

Listen to Episode 66

KaJ065: Integration

The eighth permaculture principle this week: Integrate Rather than Segregate.

And I wish I had many intelligent and witty things to say about it.

Instead, I have stories and audio from Faux Christmas 2011, integrating the Family Dolph into the podcast. It's a bit of integration and a bit of worlds colliding for your listening pleasure.

Music this week by Edward Martin and by a select quartet of the Family Dolph.

Listen to Episode 65

KaJ064: From Patterns to Details

This week we're just past halfway, with the seventh permaculture principle: Design from Patterns to Details.

There is so much scientific and mathematical theory supporting this principle. If you would like to get lost in the details, you might start with the wiki on Constructal theory.

Mr. Edward Martin provides the rondeau.

Listen to Episode 64

KaJ063: No Waste

This week it's the sixth permaculture principle: Produce No Waste.

You can read about the Zero Waste Family and see the pretty jars. The mom of this family, B'ea Johnson, also blogs at Zero Waste Home.

There is an entertaining "No Such Thing as Waste" video to take a look at. The host site, "Beaver State Permaculture, is full of information about permaculture.

Collen Patrick-Goudreau hosts the Vegetarian Food for Thought Podcast. Her suggestion that you make steps has been inspiring to me.

My husband Doug blogs about winter bicycle commuting at MN Bicycle Commuter. He has made his own steps.

In a Bit of a Forecast I'm suggesting that college football fans root for the underdog team, the St. Xavier University Cougars and my nephew Zach. They are playing the Carroll College Fighting Saints, who are favored to win.

Mr. Edward Martin provides the lute music.

Listen to Episode 63

KaJ062: Two Renewables

Nothing too heavy, here. We knitters know our renewables.

We're on to the fifth permaculture principle: Use and Value Renewable Resources and Services.

I talked about this interesting concept of energy descent in a Bit of Knitting. Also worth taking a look at is the Energy Descent Action Plan Primer.

There are a few "Bollywood" movies I'd like to recommend.

I did mention a delicious dessert we've been eating around here:Pumpkin Cake with Sage Ice Cream and Pumpkin Cherry Compote.

Thanks to Edward Martin.

Listen to Episode 62

KaJ061: Regulation and Feedback

The fourth principle of permaculture is: Apply Self-Regulation and Accept Feedback.

Here is a definition of autoregulation.

In a Bit of Chatter I mentioned planting two blue muffin viburnum.

Thanks to Edward Martin.

Listen to Episode 61

KaJ060: The Yield

This week, the third Permaculture Principle: Obtain a Yield.

The quote in a Bit of Chatter is from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech, delivered in 1956: Facing the Challenge of a New Age.

The ambiance for this episode is, as always, provided by Edward Martin.

Listen to Episode 60

KaJ059: Catching and Storing

This week, Permaculture Principle the Second: catch and store energy.

First, the link to Pumpkin Flapjacks.

And a Ravelry link to the Tremont Jacket.

And a Ravelry link to Jean Frost's designer page.

Did I mention that I adore Kid n Ewe yarn, by Bryspun? And that it's discontinued?

Edward Martin provided the musical interludes for this episode.

Listen to Episode 59

KaJ058: Interacting and Observing

Edward Martin provided the musical interludes for this episode.

This is the first in the twelve-week "permaculture series". I'm thinking and talking about the principle "Observe and Interact".

If you would like to look at the permaculture ethics and principles, you can find them at Permaculture Principles.

You might also check out Permaculture (dot) Net.

If you live in a cold climate, like me, have a look at Permaculture Cold Climate site, a member of the Permaculture Research Institute.

For reference, the book I'm reading is Introduction to Permaculture, written by Bill Mollison.

Listen to Episode 58

KaJ057: Knitajourney Girls

This is the second "Stolen Format" episode. Thanks to the Knitmore Girls for allowing me and my mom, Barb to steal their podcast format for episode 57.

We have the following segments to share: On the Needles; And Sew On; Mother Knows Best; Events; Straw Into Gold; When Knitting Attacks (not in that order).

There is only one thing getting attention on the needles. It's "I Do", for my friend Sarah. This project also gets attention in the When Knitting Attacks segment.

The yarn I'm using for "I Do" is Plymouth Fantasy Naturale, a nice, sturdy cotton in a bright white. Possibly not the right yarn for this project, which has a tight deadline.

For this episode, Jasmin also shared the music of Patrick Lydon, the composer of the Knitmore Girls theme music.

Knit and Sew more.

Listen to Episode 57

KaJ056: Assumptions and Miscalculations

Thanks to Edward Martin, as always, for the lute music.
Here is a link to the Maggie Kit I saw as "freeform knitting" at the Carlton County Fair. Looks freeform.
And here is a link to the "I Do" wedding stole.
Ravelry link to the Slip Knots of Plainfield group. I'm looking forward to meeting this bunch. And, you're invited, too. Thursday, September 8th.

Listen to Episode 56

KaJ055: Summer's End

Here is a link to the Carlton County Fair, where I will spent a chunk of my birthday.
And here is a link to the Minnesota State Fair Giant Sing-Along playlist.
Ravelry has a designer page for Ann Norling.
Edward Martin may not even remember that he gave me permission to use his lute piece for this podcast. I thank him anyway.

Listen to Episode 55

KaJ054: Midsummer

I talked a bit about my friend Sarah's fundraising for the "Dragon Boats". Here is a link to the Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival.
And here is a link to the NorthShore Inline Marathon. You can click through to information about the first-ever rollerskiing marathon.

And if you want to, you could click through to register, using the awesome form.

Thanks to Edward Martin for the lute music. Sorry I chopped it up so much.

Listen to Episode 54

A Conversation with Abby

This is Part Two. Abby is Abbyknitz on Ravelry.
She collaborates with her son Ben to produce the wonderful Knit Knit Cafe podcast (so nice, they named it twice).

So much to talk about, so little time, including the Big Reveal -- what does Abby want to be when she grows up? (hint: not a knitwear designer)
However, Abby would like to keep a knit design team including Ysolda Teague and Cat Bordhi at her disposal.
She dreams big, as evidenced by her "dream project" and her "perfect local yarn shop".

Thanks to Abby for our conversation.

Listen to Abby

A Conversation with Ben

Here is Part One of the two-part conversation with the podcasters of the Knit Knit Cafe.
I first spoke with Ben, who goes by NumbersAndNoise on Ravelry.

Ben raised an interesting question. Would a man who wears a brogued shoe also be willing to wear an openwork (read: lace) piece? Hmmm. . .

A designer Ben likes: Steven West, perhaps you've heard of him?
We also talked a bit about the blog TECHknitting. Ben was correct, it's TECH knitting, not TECH knitter. And it is an excellent resource.

Thank you, thank you to Ben for spending the ninety minutes talking with me.

Listen to Ben

KaJ053: Use Your Words

First and foremost, big thanks to Lian Dolan, host of the Chaos Chronicles Podcast for reminding us that July is National Ice Cream Month. Go to her site for links to her excellent podcast and more information about ice cream statistics. Also, her ice cream watermelon looks more than delicious.

Today I mentioned the band that has been bringing the rocket sauce for decades. That would be Rush. I also gave kudos to Neil Peart for excellence in the fields of percussion, lyric writing and beanie wearing.

As always, thanks and respect to Mr. Edward Martin.

Listen to Episode 53

A Conversation with Maria

Maria is venusfueri on Ravelry.
When she is not crushing on Jared Flood she produces the podcast Subway Knits. It's a good one.

The knitting history book Maria mentioned has apparently changed subtitles. I found it as Knitting Around the World: A Glorious History from Norwegian Setesdal Sweaters to Peruvian Ch'ullu Hats. She also referred to a Knitty article by Julie Theaker titled History 101.

Other designers Maria likes: Ysolda Teague; Gudrun Johnston; Courtney Kelley and Kate Gagnon Osborn, the designers of Vintage Modern Knits.

Maria mentioned these four patterns (Ravelry links):Rose Lace Stole; Anthemion; Bramble Beret; Swallowtail Shawl.

And finally, two independent sellers on Maria's mind the day we talked: Fresh from the Cauldron and Gherkin's Bucket.

Big thanks to Maria for the chat.

KaJ052: Shabby.

Deb, who is raederle on Ravelry, puts out a fine podcast called Craft Patience.

It was great fun talking with her.

KaJ051: Skilled Hands.

Edward Martin's baroque lute music runs through this episode. I am grateful to him for allowing me to use one of his recordings for knitajourney.

On Saturday, May 28th 2011, Mr. Martin is performing as a member of the Chambure Vihuela Quartet at St. Michael's Church in Duluth, MN.

I recommend this unique opportunity to hear exquisite music performed by musicians of rare talent.

Click the Quartet link to find details about the Quartet itself and about the performance.

Listen to Episode 51

A Conversation with Erin

Erin of The Anatomy of Knitting podcast is in conversation with me. She is lovely, charming, funny, and all good things. Her podcast is good things, too.

She talked about her love for the patterns of Hannah Fettig, including the Effortless Cardigan, Whisper Cardigan and LIghtweight PUllover.

Erin also loves the patterns of Eleanor Brown. She is the person who designed the Plum Frost Cardigan and Pullover.

Thanks, Erin, for this wonderful chat.

KaJ050: Knitahighfiberjourney.

The first in an occasional series I'm calling "Stolen Formats".
This time I'm borrowing from Coggie of the High Fiber Diet podcast.
If you're looking for the "recipes" from the In the Kitchen section, go to the recipes page.

Thanks to Cogie for allowing me to "steal" her format. Listen to Episode 50

A Conversation with Miss Kalendar

Erin, aka Miss Kalendar, produces the Brass Needles podcast.
Its a "knitting and" type of podcast, in which she combines knitting with science fiction, cosplay, and the world of steampunk.

We two had so many things to discuss, I had to edit this conversation down, and then edit some more. It was difficult to cut things (well, except for my own blabbing).
I kept the very best parts of this very interesting conversation.
Thanks, Miss K.

KaJ049: Enamored.

Calming baroque lute music provided by Edward Martin. Thanks, Ed.

KaJ048: Path and Pace

Back from the podcast break. Hello, everyone!
I recorded this podcast on Sunday, April 3rd, but then had a time of the editing and uploading. Sorry for the delay.

My heartfelt thanks for the two months' support. I am grateful in ways for which I have no words (though I do try to find them in a Bit of Chatter).

In the first Bit of Knitting, I talked about the Winter White:

This is a little design of my very own.

I also talked about Anasazi By the Sea:

Anasazi Vest, a Judith Shangold pattern.

And then there is the Aran Stole, on its way to a silent auction:

I cobbled together a few cables from a Harmony Guide for this.

In the second Bit of Knitting I talked about what I'm currently working on (I know, a rare thing for me).

And there is a Bit of a Forecast. Podcaster interviews are coming back. I know. I'm excited, too.

Edward Martin provides the lute music.

Listen to Episode 48

KaJ047: All is Well.

A very brief episode to explain a few things before I take a break from podcasting.
I'm having a little inpatient stay for treatment and recovery before I have more rest and recovery time.

While I'm here I will be knitting my second Anasazi Vest, a Judith Shangold pattern.

If you would like to keep up on my progress through treatment and recovery, look for my journal page at Caring Bridge. The page will be listed under my name, Susan Dolph, probably with no space. You will need to set up a login account in order to search the journal pages.

Calming baroque lute music provided by Edward Martin. Thanks, Ed.

KaJ046: Up to Speed

Happy New Year, Everyone.

In this episode, I'm bringing people up to speed on some things that have been happening in my little world.>br>
There are just a few links to share. These are the movies for the past year's Thanksgiving Day Movie Marathon:
Camelot,
Pippin,
Pirates of Penzance.

OH, and the dreamy Rex Smith.

As always, baroque lute music provided by Edward Martin. Thanks, Ed.

I'm so glad that Dawn and I finally had an opportunity to talk. She has a great podcast titled Knit Naturally.

Episode 44: 'Tis the Season

The winner of the podcast donation incentive is Cori, aka irocknits. Congratulations, Cori -- and, thanks.
Thank you to everyone who has made a donation to the podcast.

The next podcast donation incentive is coming in March (maybe February) 2011. Keep your ear to the podcast for that.

In this episode, a Bit of Knitting about my 2010 knitting journey. Things I've learned, things I've completed, things I have not.
Also, a Bit of Knitting about plans for the first half of 2011. I came up with eight projects to plan for.
I have vague plans to travel west and even more vague plans to travel east in 2011. I hope to knit with some knitajourney listeners along the way.
I am also making some plans for the podcast, which may include skits.
I talk just a little bit about my alter ego. Three words: Shenene, Shenene, Shenene.

I explain how my dog Dash Riprock came to be Head of Household.
I ask for book reading suggestions for my upcoming year of directed reading.
There is a Bit of a Forecast about Dawn of Knit Naturally coming around for a chat.
And there are many people to thank.

Here is a conversation with Louise of Caithness Craft Collective podcast.

Louise lives in the highlands of Scotland, near Pentland Firth, known for its powerful tides and tidal races. Their family business includes harnessing the sea's energy as a renewable resource.

Caithness, Scotland is a beautiful, wild and windswept place, complete with its own dialect. Click that link and you'll find most of the words we talked about, like firth and gowk and bairn and bowg. The word craic deserves its own link, though.

Some other U.K. - based podcasts she mentioned include Hoxton's Electric Sheep, Nic's Yarns from the Plain, and Martine's iMake.

Louise mentioned knitwear designer Debbie Bliss, as well as the Asymmetrical Cabled Cardi as her dream project.

Thank you, Louise.

Episode 43: Scary Things

It's a Halloween-y Episode this weekend.
Back to the bits, seven of them.
Two of Knitting.
Two of Chatter.
One of The Trail.
One of a Forecast.
One of Thanks.

A warning to the weak-of-stomach: the first Bit of Chatter has some gross-ness.
A warning to those who listen with young children: the second Bit of Chatter contains creepy stories
from Dracula's Guest: A Connoissuer's Collection of Victorian Vampire Stories

Thanks to Edward Martin for the baroque lute music.

I'm taking a little podcast break, now. I'll be back with Episode 44 in December.

Listen to Episode 43

Episode 42: Freestyle

Something completely different?
No bits this time, just me talking, talking, talking.
About what I've finished knitting and lessons learned from those adventures.
About what I'm currently knitting (it's a long list).
About this website and how I've done this the hard way.
About the "donate button" and the donation incentive.
About the Knitajourney Miwinter Retreat 2011 (just a little bit).
About other things going on in my life, some of them pretty disgusting.
About my podcast blackout, commencing today.
